CREATIVE STATEMENT

I have always found the transfer of physical reality to stage to be greatly fascinating. As a scenic designer, I am able to transform a limited area to an infinite spectrum of possibilities— city blocks, alleyways, home interiors and so much more. Through my process, I am able to expand these settings outside of reality with creative concepts and my artistic vision.

The first professional scenic design I laid my eyes on left quite an impression on me. I quickly realized that I wanted to create this art for the rest of my life. I strive to invoke such inspiration in other individuals. My process very much involves thinking outside of the box.  Within the confines of each project, I try to break through the norm and develop a concept using unconventional elements. Contrary to a “stock” theatrical experience, I rather create through dynamic shapes, configurations, heights, layouts, and uses of materials. This provides visual interest to the audience far above the mundane. In addition, it establishes a place for directors, actors, and other designers to have infinite possibilities in their work.

Scenic design should be more than a concrete practical element for a production. It should become an original and compelling artistic extension of the script. As I progress in my career, I want to move past the idea of what design has been and help develop it into a new impactful future.
